With his unique voice “soft and smooth” and songs drawn from the Ashanti and Fanti dialects , Pat Thomas is undoubtedly one of the greatest voices of Ghana.
Born in 1951 in Kumasi, the singer debuted in the local Onyina group before joining the Broadway Dance Band and collaborated repeatedly with Ebo Taylor. Today he is a Ghanaian highlife legend and, with his young musicians in the communicative power between funky guitars, incisive brass and a very roots singing , they are the group of afrobeat most interesting of the moment. They made a hit at last Womex in Budapest.
[toggle title=”Watch video: Pat Thomas and Kwashibu Area Band live in Wiesbaden 2016″ state=”close”][/toggle]At the dawn of the twentieth century, the Ashanti kingdom in their region in Ghana, then called Gold Coast by the British colonists, already vibrated to the rhythm of highlife, a musical style that had its golden age in Accra clubs after independence in 1957, thanks to the various groups of virtuoso guitarist Ebo Taylor. It was under the tutelage of Taylor, in the Stargazers Dance Band, Pat Thomas begins in 1966. The young singer became a star in the 1970s – “the Golden Voice of Africa”. If his international little was then muffled by the charisma of the Nigerian Fela Kuti, Thomas remains a star of African music.

Avec sa voix unique « souple et onctueuse » et ses chants tirés des dialectes fanti et ashanti twi, Pat Thomas est sans aucun doute l’une des plus grandes voix du Ghana.
Né en 1951 à Kumasi, le chanteur fait ses débuts au sein du groupe local Onyina avant de rejoindre le Broadway Dance Band puis de collaborer à de multiples reprises avec Ebo Taylor. Aujourd’hui c’est une légende du highlife ghanéen et, avec ses jeunes musiciens à l’énergie communicative, entre guitares funky, cuivres incisifs et chants très roots, ils sont le groupe d’afrobeat le plus intéressant du moment. Ils ont d’ailleurs fait un carton au dernier Womex à Budapest.
A l’aube du XXe siècle, le royaume ashanti du sud du Ghana, alors surnommé Gold Cotas par les colons britanniques, vibrait déjà au rythme du highlife, un style musical qui connut son âge d’or dans les clubs d’Accra après l’indépendance, en 1957, notamment grâce aux divers groupes du guitariste virtuose Ebo Taylor. C’est sous la tutelle de Taylor, au sein du Stargazers Dance Band, que Pat Thomas débute en 1966. Le jeune chanteur devient une vedette dans les années 1970 — « the Golden Voice of Africa », la voix d’or de l’Afrique. Si son rayonnement international a ensuite été un peu étouffé par le charisme du Nigérian Fela Kuti, Thomas n’en reste pas moins une vraie star de la musique africaine.
Sur ce nouvel album, il est accompagné de ses vieux complices. Taylor arrange les cuivres et les coups de baguettes magiques de Tony Allen, ancien batteur de Fela, transformant le morceau « Odoo Be Ba » en émanation afro-funk. Enregistrés entre Accra et Berlin, ces huit titres acoustiques évitent l’écueil des claviers clinquants et des boîtes à rythmes balourdes, subis naguère sur des disques prétendument modernes de Thomas.
