WHY GHANAIANS ALL OVER THE WORLD CELEBRATE 6th MARCH .

Remembering Dr. Kwame NkrumahWHEREAS, in 1957, the West African nation of Ghana became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain political independence from European colonial rule, and celebrate its independence annually on the 6th day of March; and WHEREAS, Ghana is a beautiful lowland country known for its prosperous economy, cloth, jewelry, wood carvings, gold mining and production of cacao used to make cocoa and chocolate throughout the world; and WHEREAS, Ghana recognizes Harriet Tubman as an international heroine whose familial roots originated there.

Harriet’s grandmother was an Ashanti from Ghana who, as a slave, was brought to the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the late 1700’s; and WHEREAS, Ghana’s motto, “One people, one nation, one destiny,” demonstrates its many peoples’ courage and perseverance for freedom, education and socio-political triumph; the results of which can be seen all over the world; and WHEREAS, as Mayor of the City of Syracuse, New York, I am pleased to present this proclamation to His Honor, The Great Chief of Akyem Abuakwa, King Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin.


NOW, THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. Driscoll, Mayor of the City of Syracuse, do hereby proclaim the
sixth day of March, two thousand and seven as Ghana Independence Recognition Day In the City of Syracuse. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Syracuse to be imprinted this sixth day of March, two thousand and seven.
